The Journey to Find the Right Van

More than a year into the search, I'm still looking for a modern travel van that captures the freedom, simplicity, and go-anywhere spirit that first made me fall in love with RV travel.

There are few purchases that combine excitement, practicality, and second-guessing quite like buying an RV. Over the past year, I've spent countless hours researching, visiting dealers, walking RV lots, comparing floorplans, and crawling through more vans than I can remember. All in search of the van that feels like the right fit.

So far, the search continues.

Chasing a Familiar Feeling

This isn't my first experience with RVs. Years ago, I owned a couple of Class C motorhomes: a 24-foot Winnebago Minnie Winnie and a 20-foot Winnebago Micro-Mini Warrior.

Of the two, the Micro-Mini Warrior was my favorite by far.

Its compact size made it easy to drive, simple to park, and much less intimidating than larger RVs. I could squeeze into places that would have been impossible with a bigger rig, yet it still offered the freedom to travel and camp comfortably. Looking back, I realize that much of my current search is an attempt to recreate the magic of that little Toyota. The challenge is finding something modern that captures the same spirit while offering the features and conveniences available today.

A Year of Looking

Over the past year, I've toured countless vans at dealerships and RV sales lots. Every visit starts with optimism: maybe this is the one.

Then I start looking closer.

One thing that has surprised me is the variation in build quality. Some vans look impressive from a distance but reveal issues upon closer inspection. I've seen paper laminates peeling from walls and ceilings, poorly finished cabinetry, and materials that simply don't inspire confidence for years of travel. For a purchase of this size, I want something that feels solid and well-built—not something that already shows signs of wear before it ever leaves the lot.

What I'm Looking For

I've developed a fairly specific list of requirements during this search. The ideal van would include:

  • An all-electric design with solar power
  • No propane systems
  • No onboard generator
  • Sleeping space for more than two people
  • Overall length under 21 feet
  • Single rear wheels (no dually setup)

Some of these requirements eliminate a surprising number of options. Many vans still rely heavily on propane systems, generators, or layouts designed primarily for couples. I want something versatile enough for a quick weekend getaway but also comfortable enough for multi-week adventures. It needs to be easy to drive, easy to park, and flexible enough to handle whatever trip comes next.

Why I'm Leaning Toward New

Originally, I expected to find a used van and save a significant amount of money.

That hasn't happened.

Many used vans that meet most of my requirements are only a few years old, and their asking prices often aren't dramatically lower than new models. At the same time, many of those used units still include propane systems or generators that don't fit my vision for the future. Meanwhile, I've noticed many 2025 and newer models sitting on dealer lots with substantial discounts from MSRP. When the price difference between used and new becomes relatively small, the value proposition starts to shift. A new van brings updated technology, a warranty, and the ability to start fresh without inheriting someone else's modifications or maintenance history.

The Search Continues

The good news is that the market is shifting. Manufacturers are flooding the space with more variety than ever before, introducing innovative floorplans, robust off-grid power systems, and smarter approaches to van-based living.

The bad news is that none of them have felt quite right yet. I'm in no rush to buy simply for the sake of buying. This is a major purchase, and I'd rather wait a little longer for the right van than settle for one that checks most of the boxes but leaves me wishing I had been more patient.

For now, the search continues.

Maybe the perfect van is already sitting on a dealer lot waiting for me to discover it. Maybe it's a model that hasn't been released yet. Either way, I'm willing to keep looking until I find something that feels like the right fit. After all, the goal isn't just to own a van. The goal is to find the one that makes me excited to hit the road every time I turn the key.
